Gestalt Coaching or Gestalt Therapy?

International Gestalt Journal, 2009. Marion Gillie & Marjorie Shackleton.)

This paper sets out the dilemmas faced by the authors and received wisdom
of what are ‘professionally acceptable’ arenas of work for Gestalt coaches particularly
when it comes to dealing with the emotional life of the coachee. We explore the
following questions:
• What are the differences between Gestalt Coaching and Gestalt Therapy and
the resulting implications for the coaching contract?
• What does the coach need to attend to when dealing with the emotional world
of their coachee?
• Is a Gestalt oriented coach more likely to evoke emotional responses than
other ‘flavours’ of coaching?
We offer both discussion and case study material which is intended to guide thinking
and professional practice as each one of us attempts to make whatever decision is right
in the moment for the particular coachee we are working with.

Coaching shame prone clients: synopsis

(Coaching at Work, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Volume 4, Issue 1, pp 44-47, January 2009.)

In the world of business shame isn't a word you often hear, we are more likely to refer to the fear of humiliation, a close cousin. Shame is that sense of sudden exposure in
front of others coupled with an overwhelming desire to hide. Whilst we may not
encounter shame-prone clients in our coaching work as often as in the therapy room,
I think that an understanding of the dynamics of shame and how to work with it are
highly relevant to our work as coaches.

Applying Gestalt theory to coaching: a commentary. Submitted to Gestalt Review, 2009

(Submitted to Gestalt Review, 2009)

In his paper, Stuart Simon describes the evolution of the "profession" of coaching over the last decade
or so, and the relatively recent interest in the application of Gestalt theory to coaching. In this
commentary I want first to support Stuart's assertion that "Gestalt theory easily lends itself to
offering a significant contribution to the field of professional coaching" by drawing links with
research and writing of other coaches who do not have a Gestalt background. Second, I want to
explore a question raised by Stuart Simon but not answered: "what is the difference between
coaching and therapy", particularly in the context of executive coaching where the work takes place
within the organizational context.
